  1. Clement Dodd's Studio One is absolute ground zero for modern Jamaican music, and there's no denying that the sturdy rhythm tracks that were created at Studio One during its s and s peak were funky. Jamaican funky, that is, which isn't quite the same thing as funk.

  5. I bought this cd because the cover said "studio one funk"; and Jamaican funk is something I wanted to hear, as it is so rare. They had better called it "Some Studio One Funk and Lots of Plain Reggae". No that it's not good, but be warned.

  7. An album that definitely earns its title – as it marks the renewed strength of the Studio One label in the late 70s – an era when much of the reggae mainstream had moved to the major labels, but the tiny Jamaican indie was well-poised to stand supreme in the new wave of dancehall sides Missing: Shaft.
  8. Soul Jazz's attempt to stuff a bunch of Studio One tracks into the funk genre sees them trying a bit too hard - there are only a couple of tracks that could unequivocally be described as funk, notably the superb Now by Lee Arab, which retains a tiny hint of reggae and that unmistakeable Studio One sound to let you know it's Jamaican not American/5(6).
